For the fifth year in a row, Michael T. van der Veen has been named to the Pennsylvania Super Lawyers® list. van der Veen chairs his firm’s litigation department, concentrating in catastrophic injury, commercial litigation and criminal defense. Relentless in the court room, van der Veen has earned a reputation as a ruthless advocate who fights for the injured and unjustly accused. van der Veen has won multimillion-dollar jury verdicts in both state and federal courts as well as high-profile criminal cases.
THIS YEAR’S DOCKET: In the civil courts, van der Veen won, on the eve of trial, a seven-figure settlement for a former prize fighter hit by a drunk driver who had been served while intoxicated at an after-hours union bar. He also reached a confidential settlement on behalf of a child seriously injured by a defective scooter and he successfully represented a laborer injured at a construction site.
In the criminal courts, van der Veen won acquittals at trial for clients charged with crimes that stir the public's passion at the expense of the accused’s innocence, including a juvenile charged with first-degree sexual assault. He also won the dismissal of felony charges for Internet crimes on behalf of a small business owner.
Throughout the past decade, van der Veen has made his reputation in the courtroom. He is known to be in court for 10 to 12 hours a day. Other attorneys have marveled at how he wins cases in the criminal courts in the morning, the civil courts in the afternoon and New Jersey courts at night.
Currently, he is handling civil and criminal cases that have garnered local and national media coverage.
THE FUTURE: van der Veen remains steadfast in his commitment and his compassion for his clients. “As a litigator, I am driven to represent and be the voice of injured people whose lives have been shattered by devastating injuries, and I am compelled to stand up for the innocent.”
