Larry Curtis is recognized as one of Louisiana’s pre-eminent personal injury lawyers. For three decades he has been a voice for the poor and for the rights of workers in his community. Though Curtis can recall wanting to be a lawyer from as early as his high school years, he also remembers a moment in his life when his philosophy toward the law changed him as a person. “I realized one day that the money was secondary to the satisfaction of seeing individual lives changed for the good,” he says.
Curtis represents injured workers and their families exclusively because it is the injured worker who is usually on the right side of safety. “Large oilfield companies put profits before safety, and then hire the best lawyers in the state to shift blame onto the injured worker,” says Curtis. “There is no better calling that I know of than to help an injured worker regain his independence and dignity through adequate compensation.”
RECOGNIZED AND HONORED
Considered smart, aggressive and relentless in having obtained multimillion-dollar settlements and judgments for his firm’s clients, Curtis holds an AV rating, the highest by the Martindale-Hubbell® Law Directory. He has also been listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in the practice areas of admiralty/maritime law and personal injury. In 1994, St. John’s University honored Curtis with the St. John’s Alumni Outstanding Achievement Medal. He has been a member of the American Inn of Court of Acadiana since 1994 and a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum since 1997. In the summer of 2005, Curtis was invited to join The Academy of Catastrophic Injury Attorneys, now the Academy of Trial Advocacy. He was listed in the 21st edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and has received that same recognition for 2009.
SERVICE TO THE PROFESSION AND COMMUNITY
A member of the Louisiana State, American and Federal Bar associations, Curtis is also a member of the American Association for Justice, Louisiana Association for Justice, Lafayette Trial Lawyers Association, The Maritime Law Association of the United States and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. An author of numerous articles on trial law, he hosts a monthly TV program about Catholic social teaching and its foundation, underscoring his continuing commitment to the poor.
